Dandruff: At Home Treatments That Work

Dandruff: At Home Treatments That Work

Dandruff can be surprisingly frustrating—persistent flakes, itching, and scalp irritation can make even the best hair day feel uncomfortable. The good news is, you’re not alone and there are simple steps you can take to help manage it.

Why it Happens: Dandruff often results from an overgrowth of a yeast that naturally lives on our scalp, combined with oil production and skin sensitivity. While it isn’t dangerous, it can definitely be bothersome.

How to Treat: At home, start with a medicated shampoo containing ingredients like zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or salicylic acid—these help reduce yeast and flaking. Try alternating between two types for best results, and leave the shampoo on your scalp for a few minutes before rinsing.

How to Use Products:

  • Alternate between these medicated shampoos
    • For blonde or gray hair, avoid coal tar shampoo
  • Apply the shampoo to your scalp.
    • If there is facial involvement, use it as a wash/cleanser on the affected areas.
  • Allow the product to sit for 3-5 minutes, then Rinse out thoroughly
  • Use at least twice weekly or as directed by a physician
